Tubby: Test cricket needs a Grand Final

2016-05-17T18:08:52Z

Test cricket teams worldwide should play each other over four years for a chance to play in a Grand Final to crown themselves as best in the world, says Mark Taylor.

The former Aussie Test cricketer says that a combination of this system and more matches played under lights with the pink ball would be the way to revitalise the traditional form of the game.

“It’s been touted now for the last five or ten years at international level,” Taylor said on SEN’s The Run Home.

“I think anything you could do along those lines just for people of every country to feel that every match they’re playing is not just about that game, it’s also about trying to make a semi or a final in a test match would be terrific.

“It just means that all those test playing nations are playing towards becoming that best team in Test match cricket and that’s got to be a good thing for any format of the game.”

The former New South Wales batsman says that the idea has only been held back by the rise to prominence of Twenty20 cricket.

“It’s been held back mainly through programming,” said Taylor.

“I’m not going to try point fingers and throw stones but I think people have been worried that if you start doing that, there is going to be more and more time put aside potentially for Test matches and they want to have T20 tournaments which obviously make them and these players money.

“If we see Test cricket as the ultimate form of the game we have to be doing everything in our power to make it that. I think a test final over four years can only be a good thing.”

Rodney Hogg slammed the idea, saying the proposal lacks impact.

“It’s just talk, it’s crap. It can’t be done. It doesn’t work and it doesn’t have impact,” he said.

“I love Test cricket but you just wouldn’t do it, it’s pie in the sky sort of stuff.

"The T20 World Cup we just had was amazing because you could study it and bang in and work their way down to a Grand Final. It just doesn’t work for Test cricket.”
