Winx's first foal sells for eye-watering $10 million: Here's everything you need to know
Winx’s first foal to reach the sales ring has been sold for AUD$10 million at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, smashing records out of the water in the process.
The filly, the only living foal from 25-time Group 1 winner Winx, was purchased by Woppit Bloodstock and Debbie Kepitis, who is also a part-owner of Winx.
That purchase is set to see the filly race in Australia.
American business tycoon John Stewart had previously promised to pay upwards of AUD$9 million to secure the yearling but was outbid.
The bidding war exceeded $5 million within 30 seconds of the filly entering the sales ring, eventually becoming the first Australian yearling to sell for eight figures.
The previous yearling record was the $5 million paid for the half-brother to Black Caviar in 2013, while prior to Monday, no filly yearling had sold for more than $2.6 million.
The filly, out of champion stallion Pierro, was sold as lot 391 on Monday afternoon in Sydney.
Winx finished her career as Australia’s greatest ever racehorse, winning 33 consecutive races before retiring with 25 Group 1s to her name.
Winx’s first foal, to stallion I Am Invincible, was lost during birth. The filly to Pierro was born in October last year and the champion mare is in foal again, with the news in recent days Winx will give birth to a Snitzel progeny next year.
