MVP, most improved, rising star and more: Handing out individual awards for BBL|13

2024-01-26T09:35+11:00

The BBL|13 campaign is finished with the Brisbane Heat crowned champions after defeating the Sydney Sixers in the decider.

Across 10 games and three finals, the Heat proved a class above the rest, but what about the individual players who stood above their peers?

Looking back at the season as a whole, SEN BBL commentators Bryce McGain and John Donohoe put their thinking hats on to hand out some unique player awards from the season just gone.

The duo handed out awards for overall MVP, best finals player, bowler of the season, batter of the season, fielder of the season, most improved and rising star.

Check out their choices for each gong below!

MVP

Bryce McGain

Matt Short (Adelaide Strikers)

“Yep, it’s Matt short,” McGain said.

“He was clearly the best and most consistent performer and dominant at the top of the order for the Strikers.”

John Donohoe

Matt Short (Adelaide Strikers)

“I think it's pretty simple,” Donohoe said.

“I think we're probably both aligned on this. 500 plus runs. Amazing season again.

“He finished second in the leading run scorers last year.

“This year he comes back and just blows them all away.”

Best Finals Player

Bryce McGain

Spencer Johnson (Brisbane Heat)

“Best finals player for me is Spencer Johnson,” McGain said.

“His 4/26 in the final got him man of the match.

“In the challenger final 3/20. In the qualifier, he had 2/14.

“I thought he was outstanding. He really lifted for the big games.”

John Donohoe

Josh Brown (Brisbane Heat)

“I'm going the batsman, Josh Brown,” Donohoe said.

“His 100 in the second game to become the equal second quickest century in Big Bash history.

“I think you’ve got to reward that.”

Bowler of the Season

Bryce McGain

Ben Dwarshuis (Sydney Sixers)

“I've actually gone with Ben Dwarshuis,” McGain said.

“I thought he held the Sydney Sixers’ bowling attack together at times and he got a five-for, he was third on the overall wicket takers.

“I thought he was superb and really led the Sydney Sixers’ attack.”

John Donohoe

Spencer Johnson (Brisbane Heat)

“I am going to go with Spencer Johnson and I'm gonna give an honourable mention as well to Xavier Bartlett,” Donohoe said.

“He comes up and wins the golden arm for lack of a better term and takes 21 wickets this year.

“I'm going to give him an honourable mention, but I think Spencer Johnson’s form late gets him the win.”

Batter of the Season

Bryce McGain

Matt Short (Adelaide Strikers)

“It’s Matt Short,” McGain said.

John Donohoe

Matt Short (Adelaide Strikers)

“Yep, easy choice,” Donohoe said.

Fielder of the Season

Bryce McGain

Michael Neser (Brisbane Heat)

“I think it's Michael Neser,” McGain said.

“He is amazing. His timing on diving outfield catches is extraordinary and the way he just flipped that one back and just held everything behind the line in the Final.

“He is extraordinary.”

John Donohoe

Michael Neser (Brisbane Heat)

“Two unbelievable catches (in the Final),” Donohoe said.

“For a fast bowler, he is an unbelievable fielder.”

Most Improved

Bryce McGain

Josh Brown (Brisbane Heat)

“Josh Brown was a little inconsistent in previous times and we really didn't know what he had,” McGain said.

“But I thought he was ultra-consistent and he always made double figures and he was second in the runs.”

John Donohoe

Xavier Bartlett (Brisbane Heat)

“I'm going to go to my man who I gave him an honourable mention to, Xavier Bartlett,” Donohoe said.

“The leading wicket-taker for the BBL and is now in the Australian squad for the ODI series coming up which is well deserved.

“I think he's the natural most improved player.”

Rising Star

Bryce McGain

Cooper Connolly (Perth Scorchers)

“Cooper Connolly,” McGain said.

“He made 181 runs. But what I love and that they need to use this, but Perth need him as a T20 spin option, they’ve got a big gap with their spin.

“He's a gun in the field, like an absolute gun, put him anywhere.”

John Donohoe

Jake Fraser-McGurk (Melbourne Renegades)

“Fraser-McGurk, he is my rising star,” Donohoe said.

“We knew how good he was obviously leading into it.

“But some of his stroke play was phenomenal.

“257 runs, 18 sixes for the year. I think he was the rising star.”
