“There were hearts in mouths": Ben Davis reveals Broncos training panic following Reynolds injury

2024-01-23T11:20+11:00

SEN’s Ben Davis has revealed the panic that set in at Brisbane Broncos training on Monday when Adam Reynolds left training whilst being unable to walk on his right foot.

The 33-year-old was instrumental in Brisbane’s Grand Final run in 2023 and remains an important cog to their premiership ambitions this season.

Reynolds missed a handful of matches in 2023 due to a number of niggling injuries and his body is a big concern heading into the 2024 season. Since training, Reynolds confirmed that the issue was only minor ankle concern and Davis is adamant the injury isn’t serious.

“It was quite a fright and we were on high alert when we saw Adam Reynolds rolling around on the deck following a pretty simple training movement,” Davis said on SENQ Breakfast.

“When you see blokes go down at training, you think they’ll walk it off or rub it off.

“There was no walking it off. He needed help to get up and hopped and hobbled with the aid of the physio straight back into the sheds.

“All of a sudden, the Broncos hierarchy came over and told us to put our cameras down as they didn’t want any shots of it.

“They took all precautions and thankfully the scans came back with no major damage.

Broncos youngster Xavier Willison was incredibly light-hearted when asked to comment on Reynolds’ ankle, insisting that the injury was a result of his age rather than any particular incident.

Davis has tipped the 21-year-old Willison to fill the massive void that Thomas Flegler has left following his move from the Broncos to the Dolphins.

“The Broncos have a good young bunch coming through,” Davis added.

“You aren’t replacing Test players like Thomas Flegler overnight (but) Xavier Willison has played seven games of first grade and he’s got a really good motor.

“He could run 150 metres and you wouldn’t know it.

“He’s had an ACL injury that he came back from last year and a syndesmosis injury.

“He’s got his own attributes and knows what he can do. He’s putting his hand up to being the 17 as a constant starter.”

The Broncos are one of the four NRL teams that will head off to Las Vegas for the historic season opener in America. Brisbane will play the Sydney Roosters on March 3 at Allegiant Stadium.
