Looking at both quicks and spinners, the Sheffield Shield expert names the top seven bowlers in the country 25 years of age or younger.

1. Lance Morris (Western Australia)
“It’s the obvious one. We know he is close to his Test debut. The key to Lance Morris is two things – his air speed, he bowls consistently over 150km, but it’s his strike rate that stands out to me. In First Class cricket, it’s 42 which is really low and just shows what a weapon he is going to be for a long time.”
2. Todd Murphy (Victoria)
“He’s only 23. What’s impressive is he’s played six Test matches, with 21 wickets at an average of 25.42. What he has proven from a First Class point of view, is he senses when he needs to take a wicket for his team and finds a way to get good batsmen out.”
3. Mitchell Perry (Victoria)
“This guy can really play. He has 34 First Class matches for 93 wickets. What he’s been able to do in a short space of time is going from the junior burger to essentially being the spearhead of the attack. He does a lot of the tough overs. He’s an aggressive bowler and I think he’s only getting better as he gets stronger. I think he’ll definitely play cricket for Australia.”
4. Xavier Bartlett (Queensland)
“He’s been injured so he’s missed the first lot of the Sheffield Shield season. He’s a big, strong bowler. He bustles in, he’s a real competitor and a workhorse. I love what he can do and how hard he tries.”
5. Jordan Buckingham (South Australia)
“This is one of my favourites and he’s a smokey, this one. He’s only 23, he’s played 15 First Class matches with 52 wickets. What I like about Jordan is there is so much scope for improvement with this guy. He’s coached by Jason Gillespie and there’s a lot of Jason Gillespie about the way he bowls.”
6. Will Sutherland (Victoria)
“Will can easily fall into that all-rounder category, but I believe if he is to play for Australia, it will be as that third seamer as opposed to an all-rounder because I think there are too many good players ahead of him who fit in that category – Cameron Green and Aaron Hardie are the two that standout.”
“But I think Sutherland can play as that third seamer as he goes along. Too many people judge Will as an all-rounder as opposed to just looking at his bowling. He led all comers for Sheffield Shield wickets last year for the season with 41. He’s another who leads for the front. When Victoria needs a wicket, it’s invariably him.”
7. Jack Edwards (New South Wales)
“I almost went with Fergus O’Neill who is doing really well, but I’m going with Jack Edwards from New South Wales.”
“Again, a bit of an all-rounder, but I think his improvement is going to come from his bowling. He’s got to get his body right, he’s had some injury issues, but I think the scope for him is massive, much like Sutherland in that third-seamer role.”
