Mick Gannon has listed Damien Oliver’s top five rides off all-time.
Oliver called time on his illustrious career at Ascot on Saturday, saying goodbye to an incredible 35-year journey in the saddle.
The 51-year-old has achieved just about all you could as a jockey. He’s won 2805 races with 126 of those being at Group 1 level as well three Melbourne Cups.
As we reflect on ‘Ollie’s’ career, Gannon has drummed together his top quintet of rides.
5. 1995 Melbourne Cup (Doriemus)
“Probably one of my earliest memories of racing,” Gannon told SENTrack.
“It was just phenomenal, a huge ride and a great win.
4. 2001 Cox Plate (Northerly)
“At the 600-meter mark he got going and he was cast, there was no way he could win that race.
“He ran down Sunline in another phenomenal race.
3. 2007 Golden Slipper (Forensics)
“It was a very good ride, he rode Rosehill an absolute treat.
“For jockeys that don’t come up here and ride Rosehill they normally have a complete mare but he rode it an absolute treat and got his one and only Golden Slipper.
2. 2023 Gold Rush (Munhamek)
“What we saw the other day was something you can’t script.
“The ride was incredible and potentially up there with the best rides you’ll ever see.
1. 2002 Melbourne Cup (Media Puzzle)
“That win was probably the biggest and best moment in this career.
“That sent shivers down your spine.”
