One of the men at the centre of one of the A-Leagues’ biggest scandals has successfully appealed his sentence and been spared jail almost a year on from the shocking event.
Alex Agelopoulos, 24, hurled a bucket of sand at Melbourne City’s Tom Glover and left the goalkeeper concussed back on December 17 last year and had been handed a three-month jail sentence in August.
But Judge Mark Gamble instead imposed a three and a half year community corrections order, telling Agelopoulos: “This was a serious offence and you should never forget that; you have been given an opportunity to avoid jail and serve your sentence in the community.
“Your future is in your hands.”

Agelopoulos via his barrister argued his sentence was an injustice given no other offenders had been jailed.
Up to 150 fans stormed the Melbourne derby last year after Glover through a flare back into the crowd as a protest to the decision to sell the A-Leagues Grand Final to Sydney’s Allianz Stadium.
It’s a deal that has now been walked back.
The riot at AAMI Park caused more than $200,000 in damage, with Melbourne Victory fined $550,000 for its fans' involvement.
