Cornes reacts to Rozee’s potential long-term contract with Port Adelaide

2023-11-12T12:00+11:00

Port Adelaide great Kane Cornes has responded to suggestions that Power star Connor Rozee is set to sign a long-term extension at the club.

While Rozee is one of Cornes’ favourite players in the AFL, he’s been perhaps the biggest detractor of long-term contracts which puts him in an interesting position if this deal goes through.

Cornes is certain Rozee, who he feels will be Port Adelaide’s next captain, will soon sign on well beyond when his current deal expires at the end of 2024.

“I think someone has got a voodoo doll,” Cornes said on SEN Sportsday.

“I think someone's got one with my face on it and they're putting needles into it because there's a big long-term contract that's about to be signed very, very close to home.

“Right under my nose and it will feature my first or second favourite player in the league.

“It’ll be for Connor Rozee, the next captain of Port Adelaide, put your house on that.”

Cornes’ reaction came after Port Adelaide GM of Football Chris Davies confirmed the club was looking to sign Rozee long-term on AFL Trade Radio.

He told Cornes that he’d wait for him to smack him across the ears once the deal was announced, which led the club great to state that it sounded like Rozee would sign a 10-year contract.

Cornes’ issue isn’t with the 23-year-old but simply believes that long-term deals rarely end up favouring the club.

“It’s happening, I love him. But I think they never work out in the favour of the club apart from the odd exception,” Cornes said.

“But well done to him (Rozee) and as I always say well done to the management.

“I’ll cop my medicine when that announcement happens, and I'll criticise it we'll move on.

“But it's going to be a million plus (per year).”

Rozee has played 106 games for Port Adelaide since being taken with pick No. 5 in the 2018 Draft.
