Reid’s response when asked by recruiters the three AFL clubs he’d like to play for

Harley Reid sat through several interviews with AFL clubs at last week’s National Draft combine.

The likely No. 1 pick met with several recruiters as clubs tried to find out what made the Bendigo Pioneers star tick.

Draft combine interviews are renowned for offering up players unique questions and Reid says his experience with several AFL clubs was no different.

One that caught his attention was when clubs would ask him to describe his footy journey as if he were writing a book, with chapters reflecting stages of his life throughout.

“I copped a couple (weird questions), but they were super cruisy with me,” Reid told AFL Trade Radio.

“They were good, each club that I had an interview with, they were great.

“It was probably more the, ‘Talk about your footy journey and all of your life so far to this day in a book’.

“It was a different one, and I was like, ‘I can't even read books’ (laughs).

“Then each chapter you'd say a heading like, ‘Family’ or something like that through each chapter and what they would be.”

Another question that Reid often received was to name the three AFL clubs he’d most like to play for and explain why after picking his trio.

Reid says he would name reigning premiers Collingwood, the club he grew up barracking for in Geelong and smartly, whichever club was interviewing him at the time.

“Probably another one was, ‘If you could choose whatever club you'd want to go, what three and why?’, that was a tough one,” Reid said.

“I said Collingwood, because of the atmosphere and the fans they bring.

“Then I said the Geelong Cats because obviously I've supported them my whole life.

“Then my third was the club I was in with (laughs)! It was a very smart play.”

Reid looks destined to find out which AFL club he’ll be playing at in 2024 when the first round of the Draft takes place on Monday, November 20.

Currently, West Coast holds the vaunted first selection after finishing 18th in the 2023 season.
