Renaming premiership cup one of several options discussed to remember Barassi's legacy

2023-09-18T17:59+10:00

The AFL is committed to honouring Ron Barassi in a lasting way, CEO Gillon McLachlan confirmed on Monday.

Barassi, an Australian Football Hall of Fame Legend, passed away on Saturday aged 87.

Between playing and coaching, Barassi claimed 10 premierships across stints at Melbourne, Carlton and North Melbourne, while he also led the Sydney Swans.

His efforts will be forever revered in the AFL, with the league keen to honour his memory.

“It's hard to imagine a bigger or more significant figure in the history of Australian Rules than Ron Barassi,” McLachlan told reporters on Monday.

“There were his exploits on the field, off the field and more broadly as an innovator and someone incredibly progressive.

“His legacy is being considered. There is, I know, a lot of push for renaming the premiership cup.

“There are other ways to remember him. Those things are being discussed."

The AFL held a minute's silence before Greater Western Sydney’s win over the Power at Adelaide Oval.

The outgoing league CEO was also asked for his personal opinion on whether the premiership cup should be named after Barassi.

“I don't think it's appropriate for me to express my view at the moment, other than to say I believe Ron Barassi needs to be honoured in some way,” McLachlan replied.

“There are a variety of ways and I know the focus is on the renaming of the premiership cup. That will have different views.

“We'll work through the process with our clubs and ultimately it will be a Commission decision.

“But I do think he needs to be acknowledged in the same way that Norm Smith has been or Jock McHale.”

Barassi’s family has accepted an offer of a state funeral.

SEN’s Tom Morris also told SEN Sportsday on Monday evening that renaming the premiership medal the Ron Barassi Medal or AFL House becoming Barassi House are also options being discussed by the league.

However, it is unclear if the AFL Commission will have time to enact a decision before the 2023 AFL Grand Final.
