Aussies back all-rounders in 15-man ODI World Cup squad

2023-09-06T11:15+10:00

Australia have released a 15-man squad for the upcoming ODI World Cup in India.

Sean Abbott appears in the squad for his first World Cup while Marnus Labuschagne misses out.

Australia has favoured all-round options with Abbott, Cameron Green, Mitchell Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Ashton Agar and Marcus Stoinis all earning call-ups.

The frontline batting options are Travis Head, Steve Smith and David Warner, while captain Pat Cummins leads bowlers Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc and Adam Zampa.

Alex Carey looks like he’ll be the nation’s first-choice gloveman while Josh Inglis has also been picked as a backup keeper and batting option.

Given Australia have until September 28 to make any changes to their squad ahead of the tournament, there’s every chance someone earns selection with strong performances in lead-up ODIs against South Africa and India.

Australia begin their ODI World Cup against hosts India on October 8.

They’ll then take on (in order) South Africa, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Netherlands, New Zealand, England, Afghanistan and Bangladesh in the group stage.

The top four ranked teams out of the 10 qualifiers will then play in the knockout stage.

The ODI World Cup final is set for November 19 in Ahmedabad.
