The Matildas’ historic run to the World Cup semi-finals produced some astonishing numbers on the Betfair Exchange.
The semi-final clash with England last week was the second biggest sporting event on the Exchange in the last 12 months, based on traffic, only marginally behind the US Masters.
The Matildas’ clash produced more traffic than any of the Socceroos matches at the 2022 Qatar World Cup, including their round of 16 clash with eventual champion Argentina.
The total number for the semi-final alone was around 5% shy of how many people bet on the Masters.
All four of the Socceroos matches at last year’s World Cup did however rate inside the top 10 sporting events for the year.
Overall, the Exchange saw more Australian customers for the Women’s World Cup, than the recent Ashes Series! Total WWC punters were 64% of the total figure for the whole of the tournament in Qatar. This far exceeded expectations and further underlines the growing popularity of the game, and the success the Matildas generated.
Significantly, 18% of those WWC customers placed their first ever bet on Soccer during this event.
With the semi-final the most watched sporting event in Australian television history we may only be scratching the surface.
Betfair continues to offer weekly modelling and previews for the English Premier League, as well as Australia’s domestic competitions.
