If they weren’t playing football, what would Nick and Josh Daicos be doing with themselves?
That was the question Collingwood great Peter Daicos was asked on SEN WA earlier this week.
If Nick and Josh were not starring for the Magpies, Peter believes his sons would have found a way to work in sport and combine their passion with working in a welcoming environment.
While Peter always felt they were going to make it as footballers, he knew they’d find themselves in the sports industry one way or another if things didn’t work out in the AFL.
“I think temperament-wise, the boys like working with people,” Peter explained on SEN WA Breakfast.
“I know that’s very broad and opens it up to a lot of possibilities, but they’re very welcoming.
“They’ve always had a love of sport, they were no different when they were younger to kids now … you ask a kid when they’re growing up, 80 per cent of kids will say they want to be footballers and are going to be footballers.
“But I think they would have somehow aligned. I always thought it was going to be on the playing side – at what level I didn’t know, but having said that, I think it would have been around something to do with sport.”
While both boys look like they have long AFL careers ahead at Collingwood, Peter says 20-year-old Nick is already planning for the future.
Even though the young gun is just 41 games into his career and is the current Brownlow Medal favourite, Peter says he has his sights on being a coach once he hangs up the boots as a player.
“I know Nick already, he’s a long way out, let’s hope, but he’s already talking about coaching,” Peter said.
“He wants to do some courses on that now. He’s already planning well in advance where he wants to be down the track.
“They’re both a little bit calculating and they’re very forward-thinking about where they need to be. It’s not about tomorrow, it’s down the track a little bit.
“Josh really loves his sport, and so does Nick, so that’s where it sits, I think.”
For now, though, Collingwood fans will be thrilled that Nick, 20, and Josh, 24, have plenty of football ahead of them in the black and white stripes.
