The 4 certainties for Sydney versus St Kilda

2023-06-08T13:52+10:00

Back for another week, the SEN.com.au team gives you an insight into how every game will play out across the weekend.

Labelling something a ‘certainty’ in any sport is fraught with danger.

But we’ll attempt to find some anyway.

Here is what we consider certainties for the Round 12 opener between Sydney and St Kilda.

Jake Lloyd to have 20 or more disposals

Jake Lloyd absolutely racks it up for the Swans and you can lock it in that he’ll find the pill on 20 or more occasions.

One of those back pockets that loves a kick-in and a handball receive, Lloyd is averaging just shy of 25 touches this year with 17 of those being kicks.

St Kilda’s small forward brigade will need to be on their game with the likes of Lloyd and Nick Blakey creating a lot of Sydney’s attack from the backline.

Lock it in.

Will Hayward to kick a goal

Sydney forward Will Hayward is normally always good for a goal or two a game.

Averaging just over a goal a game this year, Hayward will likely line up on St Kilda defender Josh Battle and be amongst it all game.

The good thing about Hayward is that he makes the most of his opportunities in front of goal, and in a game that’s hard to tip, players like Hayward will need to be efficient.

Expecting the clever forward to put at least one through the big sticks.

Max King to kick two or more goals

St Kilda spearhead Max King has returned to the side in fine form after sitting out the opening nine games of the season with a shoulder injury.

Averaging four goals from his two games so far, King could be the key to victory for St Kilda on a ground where inside 50 entries are typically deep and towards the main key forward.

Given King (202cm) will almost certainly play on a much smaller defender with Lewis Melican (194cm) the likely matchup, he could be in for a big one.

He’ll need to have a big say if the Saints are to win, expect him to at least kick two goals.

Jack Steele to have 20+ disposals

After a down game against Hawthorn were he had just 14 touches, expect the St Kilda captain to bounce back in this game.

Averaging 23 disposals a game throughout the season, Steele has only dipped below 20 touches one other time this campaign.

He should rebound in a big way on a ground that suits inside midfielders.

20 disposals should be a breeze for the 27-year-old.
