The Round 12 performances that flew under the radar according to Champion Data

2023-06-07T11:55+10:00

Champion Data’s Daniel Hoyne joined SEN’s Sportsday to discuss the five performances from Round 12 which may have been overlooked in the coaches’ votes.

Hoyne used Champion Data’s rating system, which values impact above volume and punishes mistakes, to find under-the-radar performances from players.

See his five performances from players over the weekend below:

Jacob Van Rooyen (Melbourne)

“Jacob Van Rooyen, we had him as the fourth-highest rated player on the ground on Friday night (against Carlton).

“He didn't get a vote from the coaches, and it was his ability to be able to win the ball and be able to impact it from a contested possession point of view (that stood out).

“16 disposals is a good return for a key forward and he was involved in the six score involvements as well.

“He's actually having a really good year performing 16 per cent above expectation for his position and age so far this year.

“I reckon Van Rooyen missed out (in terms of votes).”

Todd Marshall (Port Adelaide)

“Todd Marshall was the third-highest rated player on the ground (against Hawthorn).

He actually got the zero votes from the coaches, I was surprised by that and he was the third-highest rated key forward across the whole round.

“He took seven marks inside 50, was involved in 11 scores and kicked five goals.

“I was actually pretty surprised that he didn't get a vote.”

Kieren Briggs (GWS) and Toby Nankervis (Richmond)

“This is from the same game, and they were direct opponents.

“Kieren Briggs was the second-highest rated player on the ground on the weekend.

“He's actually had a really good three weeks, he's actually performing eight rating points above expectations so far.

“He’s kicked four goals in three weeks as a ruckman, 17 tackles in three weeks as a ruckman which is actually pretty impressive, but he didn't get a vote.

“Then his direct opponent in Toby Nankervis was actually the highest-rated player on the ground on the weekend.

“I just wanted to just give Toby a bit of a shout out, he didn't get a vote from the coaches, but that was the best defensive game we've seen by a ruckman in two years.

“His pressure this year on the opposition, he's the 14th-best pressure player in the competition.

“Just to put that into context, you usually saying midfielders or the half forward flankers rate high up for pressure.

“For him to be the 14th-best pressure player in the comp is fantastic.”

Cameron Zurhaar (North Melbourne)

“Then the final one is Cam Zurhaar in the twilight game (against Essendon).

“He was the third-highest rated player on the ground, the highest rated-player for North Melbourne.

“He kicked four goals, had nine score involvements and his ball use was superb.

“As we keep talking about accuracy is going to award you in this rating system.

“Four goals and four really crucial and challenging goals.”
