St Kilda forward Anthony Caminiti is set to come under MRO scrutiny after being involved in an incident that concussed Collingwood’s Nathan Murphy on Sunday.
Late in the last quarter of Collingwood’s win, Caminiti and Murphy got into a push and shove off the ball as they jostled for position, with the Saint ending up collecting the Magpie high, sending him to ground.
While it appeared Caminiti was aiming for Murphy’s chest, the Magpie was slightly lowered and received the hit high and has since entered concussion protocols.
SEN’s Nathan Buckley and Kane Cornes discussed what kind of punishment the 19-year-old will receive from the Match Review Officer given the hit resulted in a concussion.
Buckley: “At the end of the Collingwood St Kilda clash, Anthony Caminiti was in an incident with Nathan Murphy, and he’s set to face scrutiny for that.
“It was an off-ball incident that left the defender concussed and he’ll miss Anzac Day.”
Cornes: “The incident has been replayed on social media, it’s not fully clear, it’s behind the goals so you don’t really see the strike like you need to.
“An off the ball incident that’s left the player concussed, he’s visibly upset and was verbally speaking to the St Kilda bench as he came off.
“You can just tell the way Craig McRae was speaking – reading through the lines – that he’s in a bit of trouble Caminiti.
“That’ll be another big issue for the Saints with their forward line problems.”
Buckley: “I don’t think anything we say will change the MRO comes down, you said ‘strike’, do you think it’s a strike or rough conduct?”
Cornes: “I can’t tell from the vision.”
Buckley: “I think if you can’t tell from the vision, it’s rough conduct.
“It started as a football action and I think the young fella, it was a little careless, I don’t think he meant to knock him out.”
Cornes: “But he did, and it was 100 metres off the ball.”
Buckley: “I understand, but I think it was careless and that’s how I think it will come down.
“The contact was high and (impact) will be high so when you break that down that will be a couple.
“It’s frustrating, it’s frustrating for Ross Lyon, I reckon Caminiti has been amazing.
“I don’t think there’d be much animosity because I don’t think there was an intent … he wasn’t thinking, ‘I’m going to knock him out here’.
“I just think it will be viewed as careless.”
The MRO’s report from Sunday’s games will come through on Monday.
If the incident is graded as careless conduct, high contact and high impact, Caminiti will receive a ban of two matches.
If the impact is severe, he will be sent to the Tribunal.
St Kilda next face Carlton in a big clash at Marvel Stadium on Sunday.
