Warner to fly home from India after scans confirm severity of elbow injury

2023-02-21T17:00+11:00

Australian opener David Warner has been ruled out for the remainder of the Border-Gavaskar Test series against India.

The left hander was concussed and injured his elbow during Australia's second Test loss to India in Delhi.

Cricket Australia have confirmed Warner will now return home after x-rays confirmed the left-hander suffered a hairline fracture of the elbow.

While Warner will miss the rest of the Test series, Cricket Australia expect the 36-year-old to return to India for the ODI series in March.

“David Warner has been ruled out of the Qantas Test tour of India and will return home,” Cricket Australia said via a statement.

“Warner was struck on the elbow in the second Test in Delhi and sustained a hairline fracture.

“After further assessment, he will require a period of rehabilitation which will preclude any further involvement in the remainder of the Test series.

“It is currently anticipated that he will return to India for the three One-Day Internationals which follow the Test Series.”

Warner was replaced by concussion substitute Matthew Renshaw during the second Test in Delhi, with Travis Head taking his place at the top of the order.

The first of three ODIs between Australia and India is set for March 17 in Mumbai.

The remaining two Test matches take place in Indore from March 1 and Ahmedabad from March 9.
