Green injury blow to devastate Aussie bowling stocks but Starc to “play a role”

2022-12-28T09:25+11:00

Cam Green has a broken finger and is highly unlikely to bowl in the remainder of the second Test, Australian coach Andrew McDonald has revealed to SEN Test Cricket.

Green was struck on the glove by a bouncer from Anrich Nortje and was forced to retire hurt. Nortje was pushing speeds above 150km/h despite the temperature exceeding 38 degrees.

McDonald joined SEN Test Cricket before play on day three to provide the update.

“He’s got a small fracture to that index finger, so bowling looks not a possibility. But he’ll potentially come back on for batting,” he confirmed.

“So that’ll be assessed this morning (based on) where the situation of the game is at, we’ll work our way through that.”

The other main injury woe was that belonging to Mitch Starc. The left-arm quick suffered a finger injury on day one and has reportedly been ruled out of the new year’s Test in Sydney with tendon damage.

However, he may still play a role in Melbourne.

“He’ll play a role with bat and ball over the course of the game. He’ll be limited and his capabilities won't be as full as he would like, but he’ll be able to do a role for us this morning,” McDonald said of Starc.

“That’s a positive sign this morning.”

McDonald also confirmed David Warner would be the next batter in on day three. The 36-year-old also retired hurt also appearing to seize up in a full body cramp after scoring his double century on Tuesday.
