Freak injury sees Maxwell ruled out for several months

Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has suffered a freak leg break at a party on Saturday night which is expected to see him ruled out for over three months.

Maxwell, who had been a part of Australia’s unsuccessful T20 World Cup campaign, was expected to play a massive part in the upcoming white-ball series to start the summer of cricket.

According to The Courier Mail’s Robert Craddock, Maxwell was not intoxicated at the party and the incident occurred at early stages of the night when he slipped whilst running. The 34-year-old has since had successful surgery overnight.

Maxwell was also set to captain the Melbourne Stars in the upcoming Big Bash campaign but will now likely have to watch the competition from the sidelines.

Australia’s chairman of selectors George Bailey noted the importance of Maxwell in the white-ball team and how much he will be missed for the upcoming series against England.

“Glenn is in good spirits. It was an unfortunate accident and we feel for Glenn in the circumstances given he was in great touch in the last few games,” Bailey said.

“Glenn is a critical part of our white ball structure, and we will continue to support him through his recovery.”

Sean Abbott has now been rushed into camp ahead of the opening game this Thursday against England.
