The Melbourne Spring Carnival is done and dusted, capping off an incredible few weeks for Melburnians.
312,432 racegoers attended Caulfield, Moonee Valley and Flemington’s carnivals, relishing life going back to normal following COVID.
We saw it in the AFL and NRL last year and the past month on track has been special.
There’s nothing like being live at the races with friends and family, celebrating our great game.
Leading racing identity Nick Quinn was one of those 312,000-plus that attended Melbourne’s three premier tracks, saying he noticed a happier vibe on course post-COVID.
“COVID has made everyone happier, people are back at the track, you don’t see as much pedanticness and people getting narky about the little things in the past,” Quinn told SEN Track.
“When you take something away from people you don’t miss it until it’s gone, and we’ve seen that with people getting back to the races over the spring and I’m sure that’s going to be the case at Cranbourne tomorrow (Saturday).
“I’ve just noticed a happier vibe amongst race goers, it’s terrific, hopefully it’s something that will continue in the coming years, and we look back at the time where we couldn’t go and it just makes you realise how lucky we are to go the races, the footy, the cricket or the soccer.
“That’s what we missed and that’s what we need, it’s just good to be back.”
SEN Track’s own Cam Luke echoed Quinn’s sentiments, saying that it’s not just fans that appreciated being back on track, but also trainers, jockeys and owners.
“I actually think the trainers and the jockeys are more appreciative of people being on track and they’re a lot more welcoming,” Luke added.
“It’s probably the best sport in the world when it comes to being able to get the best athletes and people connected for interviews on radio or TV.
“You just feel that there’s a better feeling, and they like the fact that they’ve got 50-60,000 watching them go about their business after two years of not having it.”
