The Brooklyn Nets have fired head coach Steve Nash following a poor start to the season and internal unrest amongst the playing group.
Nash was the subject of off-season turmoil with the organisation as stars Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving were vocal of their dissatisfaction of the 48-year-old at the helm.
After a 2-5 from the first seven games, the Nets decided to pull the plug on Nash’s tenure at Brooklyn.
The Daily Telegraph’s Matt Logue believes that the Nets now find themselves in a deep hole given the controversy that has marred the team on and off the field.
“The writing was on the wall,” Logue said on SEN 1170 Mornings.
“Poor old Steve Nash had to hear comments from Kyrie Irving saying that we don’t need a coach.
“It’s arrogance at its best (from Irving and Durant) and these guys are great players.
“At the end of the day, attitude will get you further than talent and it’s proven that it’s what wins at all levels.
“This Nets team, who would want to coach them? It’s a basket case.
“There are big problems behind the scenes and it just goes to show that you can’t put talent on the court and expect them to win.”
Former Boston Celtics coach Ime Udoka has been flagged as the favourite to take over the role despite his messy exit from the Celtics at the start of the NBA season.
Logue believes that if the Nets decide to hire Udoka, it could be the change that Ben Simmons needs who has largely struggled in his return to the court.
“Udoka has proven what he did with the Celtics last season in that he took them to the NBA finals as the best defensive team in the league,” he said.
“Ben at his best, and I stress at his best, is arguably one of the best defenders in the league and in the running for Defensive Player of The Year.
“If Udoka does go there, I think it’s a good fit for Ben but Ben has got other things he needs to get right.
“He needs to get his confidence back.”
Simmons is averaging just 6.2 points per game, 7.3 assists and 6.5 rebounds across his first six games this season.
