Gold Trip is your 2022 Melbourne Cup winner.
Trained by Ciaron Maher and David Eustace, Gold Trip was given a perfect ride by jockey Mark Zahra and was ultimately too good.
Given the top weight of 57.5kgs, Zahra was given a peach run in transit to then have him primed at the top of the straight to win by two lengths.
Emissary, for trainer Michael Moroney and jockey Patrick Moloney, ran a huge race in second, looming as the winner at the 200m mark.
High Emocean, for winning trainers Maher & Eustace, came third following her Bendigo Cup win last Wednesday.
Race favourite Deauville Legend was the first horse home out of the internationals, finished fourth for trainer James Ferguson and jockey Kerrin Mcevoy.
Zahra was full of emotion after the race.
"Unbelievable, what a day," Zahra said after the race.
"I got to the front a bit soon, he’s a horse that when you go for it I really have to go for it, not give him a chance to think about it. That last 100m, I was thinking just p*** off, no one come near me. Oh it’s just absolute elation when I crossed the line
"The last 50m I was thinking, I’m going to win this, it just went forever, the last bit, I still can’t believe it, Melbourne Cup – it’s just unbelievable
"This time last year we were in Byron Bay and I was getting told off for drinking too much when Verry Elleegant one and she could’ve been my ride, redemption day today, just a miracle
"I think about it all the time that I could’ve ridden her
"I originally thought I’m a bit far back here, my one plan was not to be too close, cos I thought if I spent fuel early I’d be weak late, as they jammed up I just got to travel up and then I thought gee I'm travelling so good here
"To win it is quite extraordinary
"Mum used to give us the day off so I could watch it, just surreal, absolutely surreal My little one’s at home, my wife is here, all the folks back in WA, an amazing feeling."
