Latrell Mitchell is expected to sign a massive contract extension with the South Sydney Rabbitohs in what is “another blow for the Dolphins”.
The 25-year-old was largely cruelled by injury in 2022 but was still among the Rabbitohs’ best players and was integral to their preliminary final berth last season.
Mitchell initially came off contract at the end of 2023 but with this recent extension, the talismanic fullback will remain at Redfern until the end of the 2027 season.
“I expect him to sign a minimum four-year deal,” The Daily Telegraph’s David Riccio said on SEN 1170 Breakfast.
“That will be the longest NRL contract that Latrell has locked himself into.
“Previous contracts with the Sydney Roosters have been two-year extensions and so too South Sydney.
“It will take him out to 2027.
“Souths just want Latrell to get through the World Cup before announcing it.”
In addition to Mitchell, South Sydney have secured the services of their core trio with hooker Damien Cook and five-eighth Cody Walker for two-year extensions.
The pair boast 339 first grade games between them and their extensions suggest that South Sydney are eager to retain their 2022 roster into next season.
“Cody Walker and Damien Cook are obviously coming towards the back end of their careers but still have a stack of footy left in them,” Riccio continued.
“I expect them to extend their futures at Souths by two years.
“It’s all pretty smooth sailing as far as the roster build at the Bunnies is concerned.
“There is a lot of stability at the club.
“They won’t go shopping when November 1 hits and they largely have their squad settled.
“They’re a happy camp and they are looking to go a bit better than what they did this year.”
South Sydney finished seventh in the regular season but ultimately lost in the preliminary final against eventual premiers Penrith.
