The feature day for Caulfield comes around for another year.
Conditions will almost ensure the track rates in the heavy range, which, as we saw on Thousand Guineas Day, the jockeys will be peeling off the inside.
Very fit horses and middle to wide gates are likely to be the flavour of the day from a winning perspective.
Caulfield, October 15
Race 2 – Lamaro’s Hotel Grand Handicap
6. Saint Bathans – Andrew Forsman has this gelding going sensationally well. He has charged through the line and travelled sweetly at all three runs this campaign. He has a great fitness base and gets through the wet going. Seems a big threat to the favourite, who, despite smashing the line last start, will be conceding a heap of ground again.
Race 3 – Caulfield Classic
2. Red Sun Sensation – Stuck on bravely behind Mr Maestro who had the perfect set up to win at Flemington last start. Red Sun Sensation now has the 1800-metre run under his belt to build his capacity to sustain a run over longer distances. Love the gear change of blinkers going on and he can serve it up to the odds-on pop which has a negative jockey change of Damian Lane coming off.
Race 9 – Caulfield Cup
10. Benaud – Made him the horse to follow out of the Might and Power. Draws wide, but not concerned about that given how the track played on Thousand Guineas Day. Backs up after seven days off a fairly soft-tempo race in the Might and Power, which is an ideal scenario. Need Regan Bayliss to be positive out of the barrier. Has a starting-price advantage over Knights Order who is half his quote and comes up great each-way odds.
