Lloyd ranks the trade targets that will make the most impact at their new club

2022-10-10T11:18+11:00

Essendon great Matthew Lloyd has ranked a remanining player linked to trades from one to 16 on how important they’ll prove to their new teams once traded.

While none of these players have made their moves official yet, it’s expected they’ll end up at their touted destinates by the end of the trade deadline.

With number 16 expected to have the least impact and number one to achieve the most across the journey at their new club, Lloyd explained why each player landed at each position.

Check out his rankings below.

16 – Will Setterfield (Carlton to Essendon)

“I’ve got Will Setterfield at 16,” Lloyd said on AFL Trade Radio's The Early Trade.

“Great clearance player, he gets a lot of the ball, but how damaging can he be?

“I hope he can be a Will Brodie, but time will tell.”

15 – Sam Weideman (Melbourne to Essendon)

“At 15 is the other potential Bomber, Sam Weideman.”

“We’ve just touched on him and he falls at 15, can he be more than a depth player?”

14 – Ivan Soldo (Richmond to GWS)

“At 14 I’ve got Ivan Soldo.”

“He’s what the Giants need, but can he be more than a tap ruckman that can get you seven or eight touches a game?”

13 – Junior Rioli (West Coast to Port Adelaide)

“At 13, I know Port have high hopes for him, but it’s Junior Rioli.”

“I’m not totally sold on him, is he going to work as hard (as other small forwards)?

“I just love what (Brad) Close, (Gryan) Miers, (Kane) Lambert and these guys have done over a long period.”

12 – Ollie Henry (Collingwood to Geelong)

“At number 12 I’ve got Ollie Henry.”

“He’s got to work harder as well to be an established player at Geelong.”

11 – Esava Ratugolea (Geelong to Port Adelaide)

“At 11 I have Esava Ratugolea, another one who has been out of the Geelong team.”

“Can he get to Port Adelaide and be a tough full back?

“He’s a bit like Weideman, has he got enough mongrel in him?”

10 - Tom Mitchell (Hawthorn to Collingwood)

“At number 10 I’ve got Tom Mitchell.”

“He’s another one, does he help Collingwood? Or does he change and hinder them with how dynamic and good they were this year?”

9 – Jack Gunston (Hawthorn to Brisbane)

“At number nine I’ve got Jack Gunston.”

“He’s a high-quality player, but he’s aging.”

8 – Rory Lobb (Fremantle to Western Bulldogs)

“At number eight I’ve got Rory Lobb.”

“What are you going to get? Are you getting a player that kicks you 50 (goals)?

“Or are you getting a player who teases every now and then and kicks 35 (goals)?”

7 – Jack Bowes (Gold Coast to Geelong)

“Number seven was the toughest player to place, I don’t know what he is.”

“Jack Bowes, I had him at 11 at one point, but I’ve heard people like Dean Solomon say, ‘This kid can really play’.

“I’m not really seeing it, but I’ve got him in on his age and gut feel more than anything.

“Maybe it’s what he can do in Geelong in a new environment and program.”

6 – Brodie Grundy (Collingwood to Melbourne)

“At number six I’ve got Brodie Grundy.”

“I’m hoping he can get back to his best, but it’s intriguing how he works with Max Gawn.”

5 – Jacob Hopper (GWS to Richmond)

“At number five is Jacob Hopper, you know what you’re going to get from Jacob Hopper.”

“He’s going to be tough, uncompromising and hopefully he gets good luck with his body.

“I think he’s going to be good for Richmond, it’s just how they work in that midfield with (Tim) Taranto, (Dion) Prestia, (Dustin) Martin, (Shai) Bolton and these types.”

4 – Josh Dunkley (Western Bulldogs to Brisbane)

“At number four is Josh Dunkley.”

“He’ll be a good player for Brisbane and he’s what they need.”

3 – Jason Horne-Francis (North Melbourne to Port Adelaide)

“At number three is Jason Horne-Francis.

“Again, I’m backing in that he’s in an environment he’s happy with and they work him hard to get him fit.

“I don’t know how good he’ll be next year, but I’m guessing over a 10-12 year period that he’ll be brilliant.”

2 – Luke Jackson (Melbourne to Fremantle)

“At number two is Luke Jackson.”

“Some might say, ‘That’s too high for him’, (but I won’t).”

1 – Izak Rankine (Gold Coast to Adelaide)

“At number one I’ve gone Izak Rankine.

“I’ve gone Izak and I’ve put out there that you’d want to hope you're paying (his contract) for a midfielder as well.

“But I just think the talent this guy has got, I’m hoping Adelaide can be the environment that can bring out everything he’s capable of.

“I think this guy has the ability and talent, that nobody else on this list has.

“I’m just hoping we can see it. I’m backing in that he has the work rate and want to put it all on the line.

“I think he’s the best of them all if he can get a clean run of it.

“Match his talent with work rate and I think he’s the best of the lot.”
