Arsenal retain top spot, Liverpool survive a late scare and Chelsea secure sensational comeback

2022-10-02T11:00+11:00

Arsenal has ensured they will remain in outright first place on the Premier League table with an impressive 3-1 win over rivals Tottenham in the North London Derby.

The Gunners went out to an early lead thanks to Thomas Partey, but it was short-lived as Spurs equalised through a Harry Kane penalty.

Gabriel Jesus had the hosts back ahead minutes after the break, but the turning point of the game came in the 62nd minute when Emerson Royal was shown a straight red card for a nasty challenge on Gabriel Martinelli.

Granit Xhaka capitalised on the extra man advantage with an unlikely goal just five minutes later, as Arsenal held on for a comfortable win securing their seventh straight home victory in the process.

Liverpool and Brighton played out a six-goal thriller at Anfield, with the hosts coming back from two goals down.

The Reds were left stunned as Leandro Trossard put the visitors ahead by two goals with a pair of stunning strikes. With a new coach in Roberto De Zerbi, Brighton looked firmly in control and gave themselves a very good chance of running away with all three points.

Liverpool fought back hard and was rewarded as Roberto Firmino secured a double on either side of the halftime break.

The Brazilian was unlucky to not have got his third after a deflected header bounced off Adam Webster to send Liverpool into the lead. Brighton would have the last laugh as Trossard popped up once again and completed a well-deserved hat-trick.

The draw sees Liverpool stuck in ninth place with just ten points from its first seven games, as Brighton maintains a spot in the top four.

A former Crystal Palace player came back to haunt them as they had a point snatched away from them in the dying minutes against Chelsea. Palace went out to a surprising lead thanks to Odsonne Edouard in the seventh minute, but a Chelsea equaliser seemed inevitable.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang sent the visitors into the break level with his goal in the 38th minute, but it wasn’t until the final minute of regulation that the game would be decided.

After spending last season on loan with the Eagles, Conor Gallagher broke the hearts of the Selhurst Park faithful with his goal in the 90th minute to secure all three points for Chelsea.
