“Most embarrassing quarter”: Cameron lifts lid on player rest strategy

2022-09-17T11:55+10:00

Star Geelong forward Jeremy Cameron has lifted the lid on the mindset behind the resting of several players in the dying stages of Friday night’s Preliminary Final win over Brisbane.

With the game sewn up well before the final siren, coach Chris Scott opted to keep the likes of Tom Stewart, Tom Hawkins and Joel Selwood on the bench for extended periods to protect them ahead of the Grand Final.

Cameron was also benched for much of the final term, joking that his GPS figures suffered badly as a result.

“If I look at it from a GPS point of view, it is probably the most embarrassing quarter I’ve ever played to be honest,” he said on SEN’s Crunch Time.

“Credit to the guys getting it done (early), I’m looking forward to having a really good week on the track and soaking it all in.

“Tom Hawkins was meant to play really deep and I look up (late in the game) and he’s on the bench and sat there for 20 minutes.

“Then I went back deep and found myself 150m away from the ball in the last quarter, then I got dragged off. I think my metres and per minute and the (person who monitors my GPS) will be a little bit upset with my performance in the last quarter.”

Cameron was part of GWS’ losing Grand Final side in 2019 and will be hoping to go one better at Geelong as he bids to become a premiership player for the first time.
