The “big question” facing Cameron before pursuing Essendon job

2022-08-28T17:50+10:00

Former GWS coach Leon Cameron is unsure whether he’ll enter the race to become Essendon’s next head coach.

The Bombers created a six-person coaching sub-committee following Ben Rutten’s exit, with Josh Mahoney, Simon McKinnis, Andrew Thorburn, Dorothy Hisgrove, Robert Walls and Jordan Lewis to decide on the club’s next coach.

As Essendon President Dave Barham stated last week that the Bombers would be targeting an “experienced” head coach, Cameron’s name has been bandied as a potential option alongside Ross Lyon.

While Cameron looms as a person of interest for the struggling club, the ex-Giants coach first says he has to weigh up whether to put himself through the “full-on” process of applying.

“That’s the really interesting question for myself,” Cameron said on SEN’s Crunch Time.

“I think firstly, congratulations for actually getting that panel together with 'Wallsy', Jordan, Mahoney and Simone, you mention Andrew and Dorothy, that’s the six that are going to pick the next coach.

“I think before any applicant like myself, Adam Yze, Ross Lyon or whoever that’s going to be, the big question is are you willing to go through that process?

“The process is full on, it’s a month to six weeks or sometimes eight weeks of full-on presentations, psychological testing, there’s probably three or four presentations you need to deliver then you’ve got to meet the board if you keep on going or if you’re down to the last two.”

Given that the panel was only formed late last week, Cameron says he’s yet to be contacted by the club but will weigh up some time in the next seven days whether to throw his hat in the ring.

“It’s a thorough process, I haven’t really given it that much thought yet, I haven’t had that phone call, clearly they’ve just named their coaching panel yesterday,” Cameron said.

“No doubt next week there’ll be some things to discuss from me, whether I’ve got the energy to go through that, do I think you’re the right fit to do that.

“But rest assured, if you do actually try and go down that path you’ve actually got to be full-on, you’ve actually got to go, ‘Nup, I can’t be 95 per cent in’.

“If you’re going for a senior job what I have learned in my time is that you can’t go at 95 per cent, you’ve got to go all-in and be prepared to sit down and go through the processes as thorough as you need to be.”

Other potential options for the Bombers are fellow former head coaches Don Pyke, Justin Leppitsch, Mark Williams and James Hird.
