Gold for Coll in squash thriller

New Zealand squash star Paul Coll has risen to the occasion once again, beating Welsh opponent Joel Makin in a five-set thriller to nab the gold medal.

The World No.2 survived a setback in the first game to come back 3-11, 11-9, 8-11, 11-8, 11-7 and become New Zealand’s first male Commonwealth Games squash champion.

Coll’s clutch win comes after a run of successful appearances in recent years, namely his British Open win in April to defend his breakthrough title in 2021.

Kerr soars in the high jump

Kiwi Hamish Kerr has produced a near flawless performance to claim the gold in the men’s high jump.

Until the final jump height of 2.28m, the 25-year-old completed a perfect run, clearing the bar on the first attempt at each height.

Kerr’s record enabled him to edge rival and defending champion Brandon Starc on countback as both jumpers failed to clear the 2.28m bar but the Australian needed several attempts at both 2.19m and 2.22m.

Back-to-back titles for Gaze

Mountain biker Sam Gaze has claimed his second Commonwealth Games gold four years after clinching the win at the Gold Coast.

Gaze blew away the field in a time of 1:34:19, finishing 31 seconds ahead of teammate Ben Oliver to make the podium a Kiwi 1-2.

The finish became the third straight Games in which New Zealand has recorded a 1-2 finish, with Gaze previously claiming the silver behind former teammate Anton Cooper in Glasgow.

Swim sensation Clareburt extends Games dominance with medley bronze

Swimmer Lewis Clareburt has won his third medal of the Games by clinching the bronze in the 200m individual medley.

Clareburt touched in at a time of 1:57:59, just outside of the New Zealand record.

The 23-year-old was on pace throughout the race but eventually settled for third behind Scotland’s Duncan Scott and England’s Tom Dean.

Clareburt previously claimed gold in the 200m butterfly and 400m individual medley.
