“I don’t think Eddie has held back on that”: Edmund, Cornes discuss Betts’ book release

2022-07-20T09:38+10:00

Kane Cornes is wondering what will be going through the minds of Adelaide Crows fans when Eddie Betts releases his book.

The infamous Crows camp of 2018 will be addressed by Betts in The Boy From Boomerang Crescent to be released early next month.

SEN’s Sam Edmund has alluded to the fact that Betts has had his say on the events of that pre-season camp and will lay it all bare.

“There’ll be a small excerpt in News Corp papers on the 31st of July,” he said on SEN Breakfast.

“It’s being really tightly held, and I think for good reason. There’s elements of controversy in it.

“Look, there’s a lot of good in it, what an unbelievably romantic footy story Eddie Betts’ is, but the chapter surrounding his time at Adelaide and how it ended for him. Not just him but other players there in regards that very controversial camp.

“I don’t think Eddie has held back on that. It would have had to be heavily legalled. I’m sure some things didn’t make the cut, but from what I’ve heard of what’s in it, and I’ve spoken to some people who have had a peep at it, I reckon there’ll be enough in there to perhaps dredge it all back up again.”

That prompted Cornes to wonder if all the naysayers who have slammed the media over the course of the last few years for rolling out the story will act in a similar manner when they hear Betts’ side of it.

“This is what I want to ask - Any time the camp comes up, Crows fans say, ‘Oh, you media people are flogging a dead horse, how much can we go over the camp again, there’s nothing to see here, it’s been proven by safe workplaces, it’s been proven by The Age having to apologise and Channel 9’,” he said.

“I wonder whether these passionate Crows fans will have the same criticism of Eddie Betts for him rehashing a story they thought was finished two to three years ago.

“He’s probably got the highest approval rating of any player to play in the history of the game.

“Are you (Crows fans) going to be as critical of him as you have been of the media for reliving this story over and over?”

Edmund agrees with those sentiments, especially considering this will be the first time a player who was present has “categorically” given their version of events.

“Because it has been criticised under the umbrella of just pure speculation and hearsay,” he said further.

“We haven’t heard from a player, have we? Certainly not categorically in book form, like it looks as though we’re going to get from Eddie Betts in a couple of weeks.

“To answer your question - No, I can’t see them criticising him.”

Cornes added: “Me either.”

Betts’ book, which paints a picture of his journey from the Nullarbor to the MCG, is out on August 3.
