Is Collingwood young gun Daicos having the best debut season ever?

2022-07-18T10:00+10:00

Collingwood young gun Nick Daicos continued his amazing debut season against Adelaide on Saturday.

The first-year Magpie starred with a career-high 40 disposals and three goals to help his side overcome the Crows by five points.

Collingwood coach Craig McRae declared post-game that the 19-year-old is putting together the best first year he has seen in footy.

Brownlow Medallist Adam Cooney says Daicos is having an All-Australian season and is tipping him to finish high in Collingwood’s best and fairest.

Daicos is also the clear favourite to win the Rising Star award.

“It is the best first year by an AFL player I can certainly remember – and possibly ever,” Cooney told SEN SA Breakfast.

“He’ll be an All-Australian in his first year, he might even win Collingwood’s best and fairest in his first year.

“What he does so well is he knows when to defend, but he’s also so good at reading the play and knowing when to drop off and help out.

“He also uses the ball really well – 40 on the weekend – he didn’t waste too many and he’s not afraid to bite off that one back through the middle of the ground.

“I’m not sure how much better he can get. After 40 and three goals, how many more games is he going to have like that in his career?”

Cooney added: “Nick Daicos is clearly going to win the Rising Star.”

SEN SA Breakfast co-host Andrew Hayes also heaped praise on Daicos: “It was a ridiculous game on the weekend.

“He’s putting together perhaps a history-making season.”

Selected with pick No.4 as a father-son in last year’s National Draft, Daicos is averaging 26.6 possessions and a tick under four defensive rebounds per game.
