Coleman Medallist’s top 5 players he thought would never make it

2022-07-13T12:22+10:00

Scott Cummings has listed his top five players he thought would never make it at AFL level.

Two champion Eagles, a former Magpies star and two current senior coaches feature in the Coleman Medallist’s list.

“Sometimes it’s hard to be a recruiter,” Cummings told SEN WA Breakfast.

“When they pick a few players you go, ‘Why is this bloke here, he’s never going to make it’.

“I must say, this is titled, ‘Top five champions who I never thought would never make it’, let alone go on to be coaches.”

5. Stuart Dew (Port Adelaide, Hawthorn)

“206 games, two premierships, turned the 2008 Grand Final on its head.

“Went on to be a superstar and now a brilliant coach in his own right.”

4. Darren Glass (West Coast)

“270 games.

“I remember Murray Rance saying to me, ‘This guy is future captain material’. I said, ‘Captain of where? The ammos?’

“Absolute superstar and ripper bloke as well.

“I was certainly wrong on that one.”

3. Damien Hardwick (Essendon, Port Adelaide)

“207 games, best and fairest player, two premierships and now coaches the Tigers.

“He was one that hated training, hated warm-ups, hated stretching, hated meetings with a passion, hated the gym.

“He was a fantastic hard-nosed player.”

2. Dean Cox (West Coast)

“This bloke I suppose went on to be okay.

“He played 290 games, he won a best and fairest, six times All-Australian, premiership, revolutionised the ruck role.

“His name is Dean Cox.”

1. Dane Swan (Collingwood)

“258 games, he won a premiership, he won a Brownlow, he won a Leigh Matthews Trophy, was three times best and fairest, he was a five-time All-Australian, he won two Anzac Day Medals.

“When I saw him, he was playing in the reserves, reserves. He was playing reserves at Williamstown which was aligned to Collingwood.

“His name is Dane Swan.”
