Bulldogs midfielder tipped to attract rival interest

2022-07-13T13:46+10:00

The Western Bulldogs have re-signed several key players who were due to fall off-contract at season’s end.

Josh Dunkley is one name that remains unsigned beyond this season.

The midfielder has said throughout the year that he was in no rush to re-sign with the Bulldogs.

Dunkley requested a trade to Essendon while under contract with the Dogs in 2020, but ultimately stayed at Whitten Oval as a deal couldn’t be reached.

Port Adelaide champion Kane Cornes thinks the out-of-contract 25-year-old will attract plenty of interest from rival clubs.

“His value was never ever going to be as high as what it was back then,” Cornes told SEN Breakfast.

“He’s surplus to their needs.

“We all admire what he does and the character that he is, but the Bulldogs don’t need him in that midfield and they’re not going to pay him big money to play in that midfield that is already stacked. They need other areas of their list sorted.

“It could be one of those ones which is actually a win-win. He won’t be short of teams interested in him.”

SEN’s Sam Edmund added: “It’s really hard to get a read on it.

“I don’t know what’s going to happen to Josh Dunkley because it’s being very tightly held.”

A trade would need to occur if Dunkley wished to leave the Bulldogs.

The 2016 premiership player is averaging 25 disposals, 5.8 tackles and just under a goal a game this season.
