Kane Cornes believes Port Adelaide should weigh up making a play for Hawthorn midfielder Tom Mitchell.
The Brownlow Medallist was reportedly on the trade table last season, but ultimately stayed at the Hawks, while the Power need to add to their midfield rotation.
While Cornes isn’t sure whether Mitchell is a perfect fit for Port, he does believe the club should consider the move.
“Port needs midfielders. Port fans, would you have a look at Tom Mitchell from Hawthorn who is clearly on the outer?” Cornes told SEN SA Breakfast.
“There has been a lot of trade speculation about him. They shopped him around last year, let’s be completely honest about that.
“Hawthorn would have moved on him and Jaeger O’Meara and there was some talk about Luke Breust and Chad Wingard with them rebuilding and trying to get draft picks in.
“Is he the right fit for Port Adelaide and would it help them go to the next level?
“Personally, it’s a no for me, but if you can have a Brownlow Medallist coming into your squad and the midfield is looking like Mitchell, Ollie Wines, Zak Butters, Connor Rozee, Travis Boak as a veteran, Willem Drew doing his thing and hopefully Xavier Duursma and Miles Bergman come along on the wings.
“It’s a pretty solid midfield group and the thing that gives me pause is that he’s probably too similar to what they’ve already got.
“A lot of Port fans wanted O’Meara last year, they didn’t do that and they didn’t bolster the midfield, you’d think Mitchell would be available and Hawthorn may even pay some of his wage.
“To get quality through the door, it’s something I’d look at, but having said that, he’s not the perfect fit.”
Mitchell has played 14 games for the Hawks so far this season, averaging 28 disposals and 5.6 clearances per game.
He is contracted through to the end of the 2023 season.
