The four defensive “locks” in this year’s All-Australian team

2022-07-05T17:48+10:00

Who is a certainty to make this year’s All-Australian team?

SEN host Cam Luke has listed the four defenders he believes are All-Australian “locks” in 2022.

Luke says Geelong’s Tom Stewart, Melbourne’s Steven May, St Kilda’s Jack Sinclair and Carlton’s Sam Docherty should fill four of the six defensive spots.

“I think May, Stewart, Sinclair, Docherty – locks in the All-Australia backline,” he told SEN Track.

Hawthorn premiership player Campbell Brown replied: “Sinclair’s a lock.

“It would be a pretty remarkable story if Sam Docherty makes All-Australian, considering they didn’t really expect him to play a heap of footy this year with the testicular cancer.”

Luke added: “He’s playing great football too.

“And a little bit of extra pressure on him because they’ve been absolutely depleted defensively.”

Will Stewart’s suspension and May’s missed matches hurt their chances of making the All-Australian team?

“In this situation, you have to be crème de la crème, one of the best at your position and a legit game influencer,” Luke said.

“I think May and Stewart are in the All-Australian backline.

“If he (Stewart) is not in, it is 100 per cent based on that act (bump on Dion Prestia) because he is no doubt an All-Australian backman if he plays 17 or 18 games.

“Steven May, likewise.

“If you play 18 of 22 games and you’re Steven May or Tom Stewart and you’re in the top four … I think that’s enough for Stewart and May to hold on.”

May and Stewart were selected across the full-back line in last year’s All-Australian team.
