“Mind-boggling”: The “shocking” decision that went against Suns

2022-07-05T11:35+10:00

Brownlow Medallist Gerard Healy has highlighted a “shocking” decision that went against Gold Coast late in their loss to Collingwood on Saturday night.

Healy cannot believe Suns co-captain Touk Miller wasn’t awarded a free kick for having his legs taken out by Magpies forward Jack Ginnivan.

The incident occurred in Gold Coast’s forward half with just under two minutes left. The Suns trailed by five points at the time.

Collingwood held on to record a thrilling win which put a dent in Gold Coast’s finals hopes.

“One of those issues late in the game that struck me as a shocking decision was the Ginnivan non-free kick for the slide,” Healy told Sportsday.

“The captain, Touk Miller, had to jump out of the way otherwise his legs would’ve been snapped and severely damaged, and no free kick.

“It was mind-boggling.”

Sportsday co-host Sam McClure added: “They (Suns) could’ve had multiple free kicks paid against them in the last 15 seconds against Port Adelaide.

“They’ve had a tough season the umps.

“We never single out individuals, but they’ve had a really interesting year in and out of the headlines.”

Healy is an advocate for umpires paying more free kicks rather than letting potential infringements go.

“There’s a lot less free kicks paid from what I saw on the weekend,” he said.

“I like more free kicks. A lot of people don’t.

“One game there was 15 free kicks at half-time which was staggering.

“You’re letting a lot go if there’s only 15 free kicks.”
