The four certainties for Carlton versus St Kilda

2022-07-01T10:25+10:00

Labelling something a ‘certainty’ in any sport is fraught with danger.

But we’ll attempt to find some anyway.

Here is what we consider certainties for Friday night’s clash between Carlton and St Kilda:

Walsh to have 25+ possessions

Sam Walsh will have 25 or more disposals in this huge Friday night clash against St Kilda.

The star midfielder was at his vintage best against Fremantle last week, accumulating 40 disposals at 85 per cent, 543 metres gained and six score involvements – outrageous numbers!

The last time Walsh played the Saints he racked up 32 touches, and he’ll get very close to that tonight in what is a season-defining game for both sides.

Silvagni to kick at least one goal

Jack Silvagni is averaging a goal a game so far this season.

With clubs investing so much time into Harry McKay and Charlie Curnow (rightfully so), it leaves Silvagni to play on the opposition’s third best defender.

Carlton’s attacking brand of footy will put pressure on St Kilda’s defence, and with that, Silvagni should be able to hit the scoreboard.

Silvagni gathered a career-high 25 disposals and kicked a goal last time he played against the Saints.

Steele to have 20+ disposals and 3+ clearances

A big night is required from Jack Steele if St Kilda is to win the midfield battle.

Steele’s successful return from injury was a positive on an otherwise dirty night for the Saints in last week’s loss to Sydney.

The Saints skipper collected 29 disposals, 10 tackles and eight clearances in his first game back from a shoulder injury.

Steele will need to be at his best against a quality Carlton midfield.

King to kick 2+ goals

After a quiet outing last week, Max King will look to bounce back against the Blues.

King cut a frustrated figure as he was held goalless by the Swans for the first time this season.

St Kilda’s ball movement and forward 50 entries didn’t help the forward’s cause, something coach Brett Ratten addressed post-game.

If the Saints can tidy up their ball use, King will pose a significant threat.
