De Goey discussed by Saints as possible trade target

2022-06-22T13:43+10:00

St Kilda coach Brett Ratten says Collingwood’s Jordan De Goey is one of several free agents the club could target at season’s end.

Ratten has revealed the out-of-contract Magpie has been mentioned as a possible trade period by figures at the club.

De Goey is eligible for restricted free agency at the end of the year.

“Our club looks at all free agents in the competition,” Ratten told reporters on Wednesday.

“He’s one of those, but you know, that’s more of a question for our list management and what we do as a club going forward.

“He’s a name that’s been brought up, as has probably 15 others, maybe 20 others that are out (of contract).

“We look at everyone that is there as a free agent.”

But Ratten admits the Saints will have to do their due diligence before pursuing the midfielder-forward.

De Goey was handed a suspended fine of $25,000 for showing “disrespectful” conduct while in Bali.

The 26-year-old was also stood down by Collingwood last October after he was arrested in New York.

“We’d have to do our homework and have a look at exactly what has happened and take in all the evidence,” Ratten said.

“Because as you bring in any player, especially opponents from another club, you look at their on-field performance and you look at what you’re trying to build as a football club and culture as well.

“So we take in both sides of the equation and then we make our decisions around there and with all those free agents we will be sitting down and maybe targeting one or two, if it’s possible.

“We do assess everything they do on and off the field.”

The Magpies have put off contract talks with De Goey until the end of the season.

He has kicked 167 goals in 130 games for Collingwood.
