Why Buckley has ruled out coaching return in 2023

2022-05-16T08:13+10:00

Collingwood great Nathan Buckley has explained why he won’t be looking to coach again in 2023.

Buckley ruled himself out of a coaching return for next year over the weekend and he elaborated further on that decision when speaking on SEN Breakfast.

The Brownlow Medallist and seven-time All-Australian stepped down as Collingwood coach midway through his 10th season at the helm last year.

“The major things for me have been my boys and family,” Buckley said.

“And the second part of that I didn’t mention over the weekend was you get a little bit of time when you come out and I’m discovering what my next sense of purpose is as an individual and I do want to make people’s lives better.

“That’s the part I loved about coaching, I want to help young men on their journeys, but you’re doing it with 45 players, maybe 60 or 70 staff, and it might emanate into a membership or a supporter group, and you do have a platform to talk about it.

“But I don’t have to be in a football club to fill that void and to fulfil that purpose.

“There are some things that I’m working on, some concepts and businesses that I want to be involved in and want to build that provides that for others and can potentially do it on a wider level and a wider basis than just senior coaching.”

GWS is on the hunt for a new senior coach following the resignation of Leon Cameron.

The Giants went down to Carlton by 30 points on Sunday in Cameron’s final game in charge.
