The Sandringham Zebras have clung on for victory against Gold Coast in Zak Jones’ VFL comeback game.
The Zebras, St Kilda’s state league affiliate, led for much of the contest but were headed midway through the fourth term. However, a strong fightback saw Sandringham run out 109-101 winners against the Suns.
The key figure to watch in the clash was Jones, who was granted personal leave from St Kilda less than a fortnight out from the start of the season.
The 27-year-old has been a big absence at the top level for the Saints, and he proved that once again when gathering 18 possessions in the first half of Saturday’s VFL clash.
Jones finished with 27 touches and nine clearances to be among the best midfielders on the ground. St Kilda plays Greater Western Sydney next week and it’s unclear whether Jones will be rushed back for that clash.
The best player on the field was Sun Jeremy Sharp, who hasn't played AFL since Round 3 but showcased his running prowess to light up Trevor Barker Oval. Sharp recorded 39 disposals, eight marks and two goals, providing a good variation to tall forward Chris Burgess, who kicked six majors for Gold Coast.
Top-10 draftee Elijah Hollands continues to press his case for an AFL debut after racking up 22 possessions.
Collingwood and GWS clash at 2.05pm AEST in the only other VFL contest fixtured for Saturday.
