Marc Pittonet’s contribution to Carlton’s 2-0 start to the season hasn’t gone unnoticed.
Matthew Richardson says Pittonet’s “underrated” ruck work is helping the Blues gain the ascendency out of the middle.
Carlton won the clearance battle in their two wins over Richmond and the Western Bulldogs largely thanks to Pittonet’s ruck work.
Pittonet is feeding in-form midfield quartet Patrick Cripps, George Hewett, Matt Kennedy and Sam Walsh at centre bounces and stoppages.
“It’s just the manner in how they (Carlton) are playing,” Richardson told Sportsday.
“Their ability to score quickly in the first two games, they’ve been able to pile on the goals quickly.
“Do you know the one who has been a bit underrated I reckon? The ruckman Pittonet, just his hit-outs to advantage in the middle of the ground.
“If you can put it anywhere to (Patrick) Cripps’ advantage, he’s going to get a clearance.
“Out of the middle they’ve been so exciting.”
The 25-year-old is averaging 23.5 hit-outs, 12.5 disposals and 4.5 clearances per game this year.
Pittonet was traded to Carlton from Hawthorn at the end of 2019 and has since established himself as the Blues’ No.1 ruckman.
The ex-Hawk has played 35 AFL games since he was selected at pick No.50 in the 2014 National Draft.
