Essendon forward responds to axing, delisted Blue Silvagni shines in VFL action

2022-03-26T17:23+11:00

Saturday's VFL action saw many players staking their claim for an AFL recall in a largely one-sided affair between the Cats and Bombers at GMHBA Stadium.

Geelong put the Bombers to the sword and opened up a 49-point lead by three-quarter-time, which would ultimately prove to be out of reach for the Bombers, even after they piled on 35 points to the Cats' 14 in the last quarter.

For the Cats, small forward Gryan Miers (two goals, 18 disposals), midfielder Quinton Narkle (25 disposals), pick 25 in the 2021 draft Mitchell Knevitt (21 disposals, seven tackles) and rookie forward Ollie Dempsey (three goals, 15 disposals) all impressed in the 28-point victory.

On the losing side, Kaine Baldwin (three goals, 14 disposals) responded excellently to his Round 1 axing and will press his case for an immediate recall. First round draftee Ben Hobbs was solid with 19 disposals of his own to prove he can match it with bigger bodies.

Meanwhile, Gold Coast ran out 55-point winners against the Northern Bullants with the final score being 131-76.

Jy Farrar (24 disposals, 10 marks), Oleg Markov (23 disposals), Elijah Hollands (20 disposals) and Josh Corbett (five goals) have been instrumental as the club's VFL side look to back up the strong AFL form in Round 1.

Delisted Carlton forward Ben Silvagni starred for the Bullants kicking three goals from his ten touches, proving a shining light in the defeat.

Silvagni was delisted by the Blues at the end of season 2020 after failinig to crack the senior side in his two seasons at the club.
