Eagles smashed by COVID with just “17 or 18” AFL players available

2022-03-25T13:33+11:00

UPDATE

Adam Simpson has confirmed 12 players from last week's game will be unavailable for Round 2 after entering the AFL's heath and safety protocols.

Addressing the media on Friday, Simpson confirmed reports that the club has been decimated by COVID-19.

However, he did not name the players or those that would debut in their place.

Simpson did also confirm that only three train-on players have trained with the club, meaning there will likely be new faces the club has never seen on Sunday.

"I think we've got 12 from last week's game that will be unavailable," Simpson said, via West Coast's Twitter.

"We will be leaning on the top up players that have become available to us. Whether we use three or five, we will see. We're working with the AFL. We still have to get through tomorrow, travel and then work through from there.

"We're in constant communication with the AFL, they've been really good. Whatever they tell us, we will do. That will all be worked through.

"There are opportunities. There will be debutants this week. We've got to stay positive. That's the way it is, that's reality.

"The staff for the most part have been okay. The coaches are good. The cluster we have at the moment has mostly impacted the players.

"It is a challenge. We're in a different position to the Eastern States. They've done it tough for at least a year. It's just our turn. But we won't be the last. We will work through it. We're continually talking with the AFL.

"If it gets to the next level, we will see what happens. But I will let Trevor (Nisbett, CEO) and Gavin (Bell, footy manager) work through that.

"We all PCR tested, but we will see what happens tomorrow."

"I don't want to talk about that, in case the situation changes. I don't want to create a situation where we announce a debutant and tomorrow morning that changes due to this."

"At the moment we've got 17 or 18 AFL players available. Sorry I can't give you clarity, but I don't have clarity at the moment.

"Having the right attitude is the number one priority. That is controllable. I'm still in a positive state. We've just got to get onto it. We're going to do the best to get the best team we can available. The unity piece and our players' trademark is really important.

"We will fly on a charter, we will have a captain's run tomorrow afternoon, have a meeting and get to know each other.

"There are a few conversations going on with the AFL, for us, for the AFL, for North, playing a team with a few cases in the group. Those will take place, but my priority is the game.

"It's a challenge. You can avoid some things more than others. We had isolated meetings, but went out and practiced our tackling. We still have to prepare to play."

West Coast will be calling on COVID top-up players for their clash against North Melbourne on Sunday after the virus swept through the playing list, per The West Australian.

It’s understood at least 10 players have now been ruled out and placed in the AFL’s health and safety protocols, including Josh Kennedy, Tom Barrass, Jack Redden, Zac Langdon and Isiah Winder, who were all ruled out when the team dropped on Thursday evening.

It’s also been reported the Eagles' scheduled flight to Melbourne on Friday has been cancelled.

AFL clubs provided the league in early March with a list of up to 20 players which they could call upon should less than 30 players be available for selection.

AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan has previously confirmed that the league will play all games as scheduled.
