Report: Future of Cats coach uncertain despite signing new deal

2022-03-15T09:29+11:00

Chris Scott has signed a three-year contract extension to stay on as Geelong coach, according to Caroline Wilson.

Despite reportedly inking a new deal that ties him to the Cats until the end of 2025 however, Wilson isn’t convinced Scott will see out his new contract.

“My understanding is quite certainly that Chris Scott has now signed a three-year deal with the Geelong Football Club,” Wilson told Channel Nine’s Footy Classified.

“He will coach them until the end of 2025 unless one of the parties changes their mind.

“I think Craig Kelly, his manager, wanted a longer-term deal. These negotiations were happening when Brian Cook (former CEO) and Craig Drummond (incumbent president) were running the club. Now it's Steve Hocking (new CEO) and President Craig Drummond.

“Three of his key assistants are gone – Matthew Knights, Matthew Scarlett and Corey Enright, so that’s a big change.

“I don’t think they can even predict where they’re going, but I don’t think they’re super bullish about this season.

“I would not be surprised if Chris Scott decides to move on.”

Geelong CEO Steve Hocking recently told SEN’s Dwayne’s World that the club was putting the finishing touches on Scott’s new deal.

“There’s an agreement in place between Chris and our club,” Hocking said.

“I’m on record in saying that prior to Christmas, people want to potentially see a signature, but these things take a bit longer. There’s nothing untoward, we’re just working on a couple of final things.

“He’s committed here and committed to Geelong, we have clearly made change around Chris (in the off-season).

The Geelong premiership coach is entering his 12th season at the helm in 2022.
