The New Zealand White Ferns have regained momentum in their home World Cup campaign, beating India by 62 runs on Thursday.
Entering their third group match with a 1-1 record, the White Ferns’ sent out a statement as they piled on a total of 260 from their 50 overs against the competition heavyweights.
Batter Amy Satterthwaite led the way with a classy 75 from 84 balls, earning her Player of the Match honours.
Despite being her side’s standout player, Satterthwaite heaped praise on the bowlers as they restricted India to just 198 in their chase.
“The timing was there in patches and the bowlers were outstanding, the first 20-odd overs were exceptional, we talked about our starts and we couldn’t have asked for anything more,” Sattherthwaite said post-match.
Head coach Bob Carter echoed Satterthwaite’s comments, adding that the most pleasing aspect for him was the bowling attack's ability to heap pressure on a strong Indian batting line-up.
“I think the most pleasing thing was certainly the way we bowled,” he said on SENZ Mornings.
“I think we’d been a little bit off the pace with our bowling, certainly over the Indian series before we started the World Cup.
“Yesterday we applied the pressure from ball one really, which was down to Frankie Mackay and her amazing spell at the start of the innings in the power play which is never easy.
“Then it was followed up by the rest of the bowlers.
“Very pleased with that performance, and also being able to get 260. I thought we were a little bit short of where we should have been, but if I had been offered 260 at the start of the game, I think I might have taken it.”
New Zealand’s next group game comes against competition favourites Australia on Sunday at the Basin Reserve.
