Australian cricket has entered a new era with Andrew McDonald as interim coach following Justin Langer’s resignation.
McDonald played four Test matches for Australia and has most notably coached Victoria and the Melbourne Renegades to Sheffield Shield and Big Bash titles respectively.
Australian white-ball captain Aaron Finch, who has worked closely with McDonald for Victoria and the Renegades, says the team is enjoying his approach to the role.
“He’s been really good,” Finch said on 1170 SEN.
“He’s always very calm and very measured. He’s very well planned and methodical from that side of it.
“Nothing has really changed a huge amount from him being an assistant.”
Finch said that whilst he thanked Langer for the past four years, he said that it was time for a change in the Australian coaching set up.
Finch further added that he does regret how Langer left the role, but insisted that the players had no part in his controversial exit.
“There were the conversations that happened in August which were really beneficial,” he said.
“That was my last interaction from that side of it.
“The game keeps evolving and moving forward so you’ve got to be conscious of that.
“(The team) has to make sure that we take every opportunity to keep being successful out on the ground.”
McDonald’s history in the Australian coaching ranks has meant that he has slotted in seamlessly.
“(He’s always had) a close relationship with the bowlers,” Finch continued.
“(Being head coach) takes him away from that a little more to be around the group.
“He’s done a fantastic job so far.”
