How a “sliding doors moment” resulted in an ODI hat-trick

2022-02-06T11:44+11:00

Anthony Stuart took a hat-trick for Australia at the MCG in just his third one-day international in January 1997.

Stuart dismissed Pakistan trio Ijaz Ahmed, Mohammad Wasim and Moin Khan in consecutive balls before finishing with figures of 5-26 off 10 overs.

It turned out to be the paceman’s last ODI for Australia and his final appearance for his country.

The New South Welshman revealed a “sliding doors moment” that occurred before he had Khan caught in slip by Mark Taylor to complete his hat-trick.

“The crowd noise was incredible, even for a half-full stadium. People banging on seats and banging on the fence,” Stuart told SEN’s This Is Your Journey – thanks to Tobin Brothers.

“For a fraction of a second, the noise got me. But what overruled me was my feet, my rhythm so I just kept going … it could’ve gone either way.

“I could’ve stopped, or I could’ve kept going and I’ve never forgotten it - that sliding doors moment because no doubt if I stopped, I go back to my mark, I probably don’t get it.

“You just don’t know. You need that much to go your way to get a wicket.”

Stuart took 70 first-class wickets and 45 List A scalps before retiring from cricket in 2000.
