Collingwood forward Mason Cox is hoping to receive approval from the AFL to wear prescription sunglasses in games this season and the news has drawn a mixed reaction from fans.
The 30-year-old has endured multiple eye injuries across his career, undergoing six different surgeries and nearly going blind in one eye.
Cox was forced to spend two weeks on his back in a dark room as part of his recovery in 2019.
Former Port Adelaide midfielder Kane Cornes believes the AFL should approve the eyewear for Cox.
“There’s clearly a reason behind it, he thinks his performance is going to be improved,” Cornes told SEN Breakfast.
“I’ve got no issue with it. It’s just a different sight.
“I wouldn’t have an issue with it at all. We’ve got these ruckmen that honestly wear like a cricket pad under their sock for a shin guard.
“They are so hard and they just and drive their knee up with the shin guard on. The least of the opposition’s worries is a pair of goggles.”
SEN Chief Reporter Sam Edmund agreed, saying Cox was entitled to want to protect his eyes.
“The guy has been through hell and back with his eyes. Surely he’ll get approval for it,” Edmund added.
Cox has played 76 career games for the Magpies, including seven in 2021.
