“It’s more than just netball”: How Wilson has boosted shooting percentage

2022-01-18T13:34+11:00

Silver Ferns shooter Maia Wilson has explained how she’s come to be shooting at over 90 per cent in recent weeks, far better than her average over the previous year.

The Silver Ferns are currently featuring in a quad series, taking on Australia, England and South Africa. With the Commonwealth games just six months away, the series is crucial for all sides, however the Ferns are yet to put their best foot forward.

They lost heavily to Australia and narrowly to England, now with two games left against South Africa. However, they have missed out on the final.

While there’s plenty to do for the defending commonwealth-game champions, one piece of the puzzle that has been working is Wilson up forward.

The 24-year-old has been shooting strongly in recent weeks, suggesting her life position off the court has helped her perform.

“I guess for me it hasn’t been like that in the last twelve months,” Wilson told Mornings with Ian Smith.

“I guess not only is it looking back at shooting techniques, but actually being quite happy and settled with where I am and my own self and personal life and mental health everything like that.

“What Nols (coach Noeline Taurua) really does well and preaches within the Silver Ferns environment is that a lot of the time it’s more than just netball, it’s about us as people and we need to be really solid on who we are and where we are in life to be able to contribute to the Silver Ferns environment.

“That’s where I’ve come along in the last couple of weeks.”

The Ferns next play South Africa on Wednesday and Thursday morning for 3rd and 4th place in the quad series.
