Australia convincingly win Hobart Test, claim 4-0 Ashes series victory

2022-01-16T21:58+11:00

Australia have wrapped up the fifth and final Ashes Test in Hobart within three days, bowling England out for 124 in the fourth innings to win by 146 runs.

The start of the day’s play was all in the touring side’s favour, with paceman Mark Wood removing Scott Boland (8), Travis Head (8) and Steve Smith (27) early in the piece to leave the Aussies reeling at 6/63.

A mini fightback from Cameron Green (23) and Alex Carey (49) helped Australia to a total of 155, setting England 271 to win. Wood finished the innings as the pick of the bowlers, taking five of his six wickets on Sunday and ending with figures of 6/37.

The run chase started well for England, with Rory Burns (26) and Zak Crawley (36) allowing fans in the UK to think about the visitors earning their first win of the series, but all-rounder Green’s opening spell where he removed both openers and Dawid Malan (10) started the rot.

Joe Root (11) and Ben Stokes (5) would fall cheaply shortly after, with the rest of the order standing no chance under lights at Bellerive, as Pat Cummins (3/42), Scott Boland (3/18) and Green (3/21) did the damage with the pink ball.

With the last Test of the campaign wrapped up and Australia taking a 4-0 victory, Travis Head was named player of the series for his 357 runs at 59.50 across four appearances.

Australia moves on to a home white-ball series against New Zealand while England head for a T20 tour of the Caribbean beginning next Sunday.
